By the 1760s, the tradition of sending gifts began to be replaced by prettily written and sometimes ornate letters. The oldest Valentine dates from 1790 and is known as 'puzzle purse' - similar to paper fortune tellers today. The puzzle is to unfold it in the right way to reveal the hidden verses.
