Pneumatic Rail Car (1882-6)

This pneumatic rail car was a pre-cursor to Mail Rail, which was developed to transport mail underground. Launched in 1863 with a single tunnel from Euston station to Eversholt Street sorting office, two further tunnels were built between 1863 and 1866. By 1873 the line had extended to the main General Post Office near St Paul’s via Holborn. The system, designed by the Pneumatic Dispatch Company, saw cars sucked or blown through a tunnel.
