Royal Mail issued a three year collection of stamps commemorating the dawning of the new Millennium: in 1999 the collection focused on a thousand years of British history, 2000 focused on the present and 2001 the future. Together the Millennium Collection built to a total of 100 stamps.
One of the most notable postage stamps in the collection was one commemorating the life of Queen frontman (and avid stamp collector) Freddie Mercury in the Entertainers’ Tale. The stamp caused some controversy for the appearance of Queen drummer Roger Taylor in the background, as it was one of the rare occasions that a living person other than a member of the British Royal Family to have appeared on a stamp.
