Ludwig van Beethoven’s ‘immortal beloved’ (July 1812)

After his death in 1827 a long, apparently unsent letter was found among the German composer Beethoven’s papers. Analysing the paper’s watermark revealed it to have been written in July 1812. Scholars have long debated who the anonymous ‘immortal beloved’ might be. Two of the most likely have been identified as Antoine Brentano and Josephine Brunsvik. The letter ends: ‘Forever thine/ forever mine/ forever us’.
