Home Gallery Letters re. John Tilley’s knighthood – Disraeli (1880)
John Tilley joined the Post Office aged 16 in 1829, rising from a clerk in the Secretary’s Office in Lombard Street, London to Secretary, a position he held from 1864 to 1880. On his retirement he was knighted. This handwritten letter from Benjamin Disraeli congratulating Tilley is dated just two days before the end of his second and last tenure as Prime Minister.
