Leonard Eldridge (died 1916)

Private Leonard Eldridge served in the 8th London Regiment (The Post Office Rifles). In November 1916, Eldridge’s mother had received a letter written from Quartermaster Denny suggesting he had been taken as a prisoner of war, but sadly Eldridge had in fact died on the Somme. Soldiers were encouraged to write battlefield wills while at the Front. Eldridge made the following bequest in his will: ‘The [aspidistra] plant, I, with my last wish, leave it, and must be given to, Miss Florence Smith… She must be treated in my absence as my lover with every respect.’
