In 1992, Royal Mail had the largest fleet of bicycles in the UK and probably the world, numbering 35,000. In 1897, an initial order was made of one hundred bicycles. By 1900, this had reached 5,000, some fitted with trailing carts. In 2010, bicycles were phased out and replaced with trolleys due to the growing number of parcels on the delivery rounds. The old bikes didn’t go to waste though as they were refurbished and shipped to Malawi by the Krizevac Project.
