Hen and Chicks at Horsham

In 1882, experiments were held with pentacycles in the Horsham district in Sussex, these machines were colloquially known as the Hen and Chicks, or, a Penny Farthing with stabilizers. Their use was not deemed successful in official circles, though they did find favour amongst some of the riders using them. ‘On a perfectly smooth and level surface, the “Centre-Cycle” may be everything that can be desired - but for ordinary travelling, it is said to be an “impractical machine’.
