Growth of Valentine’s Day
The idea of sending cards to loved ones, and potential loved ones, first became popular in the 1840s. People channelled their energies into producing the most creative and elaborate cards possible as an expression of their love. Cards were made in all shapes and sizes using a range of materials and designs. The most popular themes were flowers, birds, angels and with many including popup scenes or mechanical components that revealed a hidden message or picture.
