First edition of Ulysses (1922)

This is a first edition copy of Ulysses by James Joyce. The novel was published in its entirety in 1922 and was soon banned in the UK for obscene content. A warrant was issued on 27 March 1933 to detain and open packages containing Ulysses. This copy was intercepted before the warrant was revoked on 13 November 1936. It was sent by publican David Byrne who owned the Davy Byrne’s pub mentioned in the book. The pub is still open today on Duke Street in Dublin.
