England World Cup Win 1966

Even before the Final of the 1966 World Cup football championships had been played, Royal Mail had decided to release the 4d World Cup stamp with the additional wording ‘England Winners’ if there was an England victory. In order that the stamp could be issued as soon as possible after the Final, played on 30 July, it was agreed to produce 100,000 sheets (12 million stamps – equating to three days’ normal sale) to go on sale primarily in post offices in England. When the stamps were put on sale on 18 August there was an unprecedented demand, although many believed that it had been fuelled by press speculation that there would be a shortage of the stamps.
