Home Gallery Celebrating London as the 2012 Olympics host city (2012)
Royal Mail was the first postal operator in the world to print stamps for each home country gold medal win, the day after the medal was awarded. In addition to the stamps, 110 pillar boxes were painted gold in medalists’ home cities to commemorate every gold medal winning British Olympic and Paralympic athlete.
To celebrate London being the host city, a gold coloured plaque was attached to a C type pillar box situated outside Westminster Abbey. The inscription says: 'This post box has been painted gold by Royal Mail to celebrate London as the host city of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games'.
