An album of experimental designs was commissioned from artist David Gentleman in March 1965, featuring various themes including regional landscapes, domestic architecture, birds and animals and kings and queens. Designs could be produced ‘both with or without the Queen’s head or with other symbols of Royal Authority’ but the size was left up to the designer. These designs proved seminal for almost 20 years and introduced a new size for special stamps, but the Queen’s head remained.
