Women take up the role of postman during World War 1 (c.1915)

The employment of women expanded massively across all industries during the First World War, as nearly a quarter of the male workforce enlisted with the army. Thousands of women were employed in temporary positions, in roles previously reserved for men. Many women began delivering mail in urban areas. Part of the uniform was a brimmed straw hat.
