Formed on 1 May 2007, Unite the union is the largest trade union in the UK and Ireland with 1.42 million members.

Unite stands up for equality for all and advances its members’ interests politically. Len McCluskey is the General Secretary. He first became a trade unionist in 1968, while working on the docks. In 1990, he was elected as the National Secretary of the Transport and General Workers’ Union in 1990, and moved to London to work in the union's national headquarters. He became the TGWU's national organiser for the service industries in 2004 and three years later was appointed as the Assistant General Secretary for Industrial Strategy of the newly merged Unite the union.

The Communication and Managers' Association (CMA) is part of the Servicing and General Industries sector of Unite. Brian Scott, national officer for Unite CMA, represents some 9,000 communications professionals, including many working for Royal Mail Group.
