Postman’s Walk

1961 saw the first Postman’s Walk take place in London. The walk was open to postmen and women across the country and was strictly a speed walking competition – there was no running allowed! Men tackled a six mile route while women walked three miles around the City of London. All participants were required to wear full uniform, and a sack for the walk.

The last Postman’s Walk was held in September 2011 – the 50th. Some of the old rules had changed by this point – competitors no longer had to carry a sack and the route was a circuit around the Coram’s Fields park – but the distances remained the same, and teams from all across the country came to London to take part.

Ray Middleton of Golders Green sub-district Office won the first race. Ray went on to win two golds, eight silvers and four bronze medals during his two decade long sporting career.
