Home Gallery ‘Outposts of Empire. Southern Rhodesia’ by John Vickery (1938)
Born in Australia, John Vickery emigrated to London in 1935. This poster was part of one of the seven sets of posters produced for as part of schools series between 1934 and 1939. Entitled Outposts of Empire, the posters featured scenes from Barbados, Central Australia, Ceylon and Southern Rhodesia.
The original plan had been to illustrate postal services in Canada, Australia, South Africa and India, but requests for reference material from the postal administrations in these countries had a poor result, and the subject matter was altered.
