Mails to the Fleet

It was the responsibility of the civil postal service to send mail to Royal Navy ships - the Fleet. At its peak, there were over 17,000 vessels that required mail deliveries. For this, the GPO had a special section in London dedicated to mails for the Fleet. The section was regularly updated with highly confidential information, direct from the Admiralty, on the location of ships. People sending mails to the Navy had simply to address the letter or parcels to the ship’s name, care of ‘GPO London’.
