‘Mail Packet off Eastbourne’ Oil on canvas by Capt Victor Howes, RN (1822 – 1907)

Before the introduction of airmail, the conveyance of mail by sea was the principal means of moving international mail. This painting shows a sail-powered mail packet ship. It was painted by Captain Victor Howes. Captain Howes captained a variety of clipper ships and was a veteran of the Far East, before retiring to the Norfolk village of Thurlton where he turned his hand to painting.
