Mail deliveries in all weather – Samuel Henry Alken oil painting

In a time before the telephone and digital messaging, the mail was a critical form of communication. It had to reach its destination – whatever the weather. This painting, completed around 1835 to 1840, depicts a mail coach travelling through snow, pulled by four horses and bearing six men up top.

The painting is housed in a gold frame and was painted by Samuel Henry Alken. It was purchased by the then National Postal Museum in a Sotheby’s auction in 1994.
