Letter from Anthony Trollope recommends the use of ‘road side letter boxes’ (19 December 1851)

Anthony Trollope played a key role in the introduction of pillar boxes to this country. Trollope was temporarily assigned to the south western district (which included the Channel Islands) and in this letter to his supervisor Creswell he acknowledges receiving approval for ‘road side letter boxes at St. Heliers Jersey’ and begs ‘to recommend that similar … boxes may also be tried at St. Peters Port’ enclosing a map which he has marked with proposed sites for them.
