Letter drafted by Leo Szilard and signed by Albert Einstein to Franklin D Roosevelt (August 1939)

Leo Szilard was a Hungarian-American physicist. In August 1939 he approached Albert Einstein and persuaded him to sign a letter drafted in consultation with fellow Hungarian physicists Edward Teller and Eugene Wigner. The letter warned US President Roosevelt that Germany might develop atomic bombs and suggested that the United States research a nuclear programme of its own. Roosevelt’s response was the Manhattan Project which indeed produced the world’s first atomic bomb.
