Born in Portsmouth, Joseph Barnard engraved the plates for the first stamps to be issued by a British colony. He stowed away on a ship to get to Mauritius. The ‘Post Office’ Mauritius stamps first issued in 1847 are among the rarest in the world today, with a value of around one million pounds.
