John Higgins

John Higgins was the sole postal worker to survive the torpedoing of RMS Leinster on 10 October 1918. Over 500 people died (including 21 postal workers), the greatest single loss of life in the Irish Sea. Allegedly his first words to his grieving wife on returning home that night were "woman will you get off your knees and get me some tea I'm starving and frozen cold".
