A 19-year old postwoman from Glen Cova in Angus, Jean Cameron, asked permission to wear trousers in place of the officially issued blue skirt. In 1941 the GPO nationally approved smart women’s trousers with zip fasteners on the hips and thin red piping down the side seams. Henceforth the trousers were referred to as ‘Camerons’. More than 500 pairs were ordered in the first two months with 14,000 being worn by November 1943.
