Intelligent letter sorting machines (ILSMs)

In order to improve the speed and efficiency of sorting and delivering mail, Royal Mail embarked on an ongoing modernisation programme in the early 1980s. As part of the programme, intelligent letter sorting machines (ILSMs) were installed in mail centres in the mid-1980s and early 1990s.

There are 66 machines in operation today around the UK, each processing more than 36,000 items per hour.
