Heroic postal workers (1917)

Alfred Knight of the Post Office Rifles was awarded the VC for action at the Battle of Wurst Farm Ridge, Ypres. He was awarded the honour for demonstrating “most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty during the operation against the enemy positions.”. In recognition, he was promoted to Sergeant. The reverse of the straight suspender from which the medal hangs is inscribed with 'No 370995 SJT A.J. KNIGHT. 2/8TH BN. LONDON REGT.' On a scroll is the inscription 'FOR VALOUR'.
