Henry Bishop (1611-1691/2)

Henry Bishop from Henfield in Sussex was the first holder of the post to be termed ‘Postmaster General of England’. He also introduced the first postmark used on mail, the ‘Bishop Mark’, which showed the date on which a letter was received by the post thus helping to ensure its prompt dispatch.
