First rate innovation to keep up the pace of mail delivering

In the mid-19th century Travelling Post Offices (carriages where mail was sorted on trains) needed some way of collecting and delivering mail at stations they did not stop at. The initial solution of using a pole between train and platform had its dangers. At least one Guard nearly lost his eye! This was superseded by a safer mail bag exchange apparatus which carried on being used until 1971.
