Festival of Britain 4d (1951)
The plan to celebrate the centenary of the Great Exhibition of 1851 with a Festival was accompanied by a request for a complete new range of stamps. Various artists were approached, including Abram Games, designer of the Festival symbol. The two special stamps, the four high values, and five low value definitives in new colours were issued on 3 May 1951, the day the Festival was officially opened (it opened to the public the following day).
