Channel Islands Letter Box (1852-3)

One of the first pillar boxes was erected in Guernsey in the Channel Islands in 1852 as an experiment. The idea of postboxes was introduced by Anthony Trollope after he saw them in France. The success of these boxes triggered the introduction of pillar boxes on the Mainland. This is one of two left surviving; the other is still in use in Union Street, St Peter Port, Guernsey.
