In the mid-1930s Lowestoft-born composer, conductor and pianist Benjamin Britten was a regular contributor to GPO Film Unit productions. He wrote the musical scores for The King's Stamp, Coal Face and most famously Night Mail. In 1936 he received a Royal Mail salary of £8 a week.
