Born in Birmingham, Sergeant Alfred Knight joined the Post Office Rifles at the outbreak of World War One in 1914. Sgt Knight served throughout the war along with other Royal Mail volunteers. At the Battle of Wurst Farm Ridge, Ypres on 20 September 1917 Knight earned the Victoria Cross, the only Post Office rifleman to achieve the highest British Decoration for Gallantry. He was awarded the honour for demonstrating “most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty during the operation against the enemy positions.”
